The First Orders for "PeakGrip," a Salt Lake City Startup

In 2022, I was approached by "PeakGrip," a new brand based in Salt Lake City. The founder, Dave—formerly a sales professional in the ski equipment industry—wanted to create a ski glove for adults that prioritized palm grip. The initial plan called for 2,000 pairs across two styles: a standard version and one with an extended cuff. Given his limited budget, I suggested shortening the cuff on the standard model and reinvesting the material savings into a silicone grip print on the palm, as slippage there is a common issue when adults grip ski poles. He agreed to the plan but insisted on producing 100 test pairs first to be trialed at two local ski resorts. Feedback a month later confirmed the grip was highly effective, leading to an order for 2,000 pairs. Later, in the middle of the winter season, he placed a supplementary order for another 1,000 pairs. Dave now places repeat orders two to three times a year, with quantities ranging from 1,500 to 2,500 pairs per order. He once told me: "I’m not looking for flashy features; solving just one pain point for me is enough."

Meeting the "name label" needs of the Whistler Youth Club in Canada.

A youth ski club in Whistler, Canada, runs an annual training camp involving over 200 children. Michelle, the person in charge, wanted to bulk-order training gloves, starting with an initial batch of 1,200 pairs for children. She had two practical requirements: adding silicone anti-slip dots to the palms to improve grip on training poles, and including a small white label on the back of the gloves for writing names, as the kids frequently mixed them up. Neither modification was difficult, though the label material had to withstand both washing and freezing temperatures; I tested three types of heat-transfer film before finding the right one. For the bulk order, she randomly selected 20 pairs for low-temperature flexibility testing and filmed the process to verify the results. After using them for a full ski season, she reported that the anti-slip dots showed normal wear; the following year, she placed a direct order for 2,000 pairs and recommended the product to two neighboring clubs, which placed smaller orders of 800 and 1,000 pairs respectively. The partnership follows a consistent pattern: she states her requirements, I modify the samples, she tests and approves them, and the orders are repeated annually.

An urgent order from the Colorado-based brand "MountainFit"

In November 2023, Alex—the owner of "MountainFit," a Colorado-based skiwear brand—contacted me unexpectedly. His existing supplier in Vietnam was at full capacity and couldn't meet the December deadline for an order of 800 basic ski suits, so he asked if we could take it on. We had previously produced fabric samples for him, and the design was straightforward (three-layer bonded fabric, standard fit). I immediately adjusted our workshop schedule, temporarily halting a glove production line to rush out the first 500 suits in 20 days for air shipment, while the remaining 300 followed by sea freight. Upon receiving the goods, Alex noted that although air freight was more expensive, it allowed him to honor his supply commitments to the ski resorts. This experience taught me that the flexible manufacturing capabilities built up over time can truly come to a client's rescue in a critical moment.
